Current Class Review
TOOWONG: This week we covered some Lindy Hop essentials that Renee wants to see more of on the social dance floor. Firstly we showed you Frankie’s exit from closed (aka Hook exit). This required a compression on 3& followed by a super quick turn on 4, 5. Leads remember to keep your right hand on your follow at all times! You want your hand to end up on the follows left hip. After the turn we pushed the follow across behind our backs, make sure to use your right hand more than your left leads! And also turn to the left to face her so that your follow doesn’t have to run a mile to get in front of you. This kind of left us in an opened out position so we went with it for a down the line turn to closed. So we rock stepped to the leads left and then stepped (dropping the triple) to lead a free spin on the follow as they travel down the line. Leads needed to keep up with them so that you can catch their back to end up in closed.
From here we taught you the Boing Boing. This move sort of starts like a Touch and Turn, but don’t bring the follow square in front of you. Instead keep them to the side, then push them to the left and catch their left hip in your left hand on 5. Then bounce back to the right side on 6 and then give a slightly strong push to the left to get back out to open. The trick is to counter balance our follows body weight with your own, so it ends up looking like some sliding doors/cheesy dancing type deal. From here we did the down the line turn again (maybe adding an extra spin on this for the leads – remember to keep an eye on your follow!). After a swing out we got to the last move: an 8-beat block turn pass-by. Lead your follow forward for a slow pass-by, leading their hand into your right hand for a slight compression and into a turn around to open, with a quick hand change again at the end. Good job! This week we’ll be teaching you about integrating some short (6) and long (10) count moves.

FORTITUDE VALLEY: Working on connection concepts, we took it slow to start. First up, the bounce – this is a main communication point so we got you to exaggerate it. From here we worked on the connection points between the lead and follow, then incorporated that into our 6-beat basics. Next was working on rock-stepping the follow in different ways. Using these movements, we added in a couple of pop spins for the follows. This week we will be working on more connection points to really getting the communication flowing.
