recapturing the spirit of the 20s, 30s and 40s

By now the Balboa bug has really hit you and you know that this dance is all about the feel and where your weight is. Balboa Level 3 is all about trying to find the internal meaning of the dance so you can go from making it as smooth as smooth, to busting it wide open. In this class you will find out the meaning behind that frustrating phrase ‘it’s a natural move’.

Current Class Review
In level 3 last week, we had a look at a reverse side exit into a reverse direction catch from the throwout.

Our base combo was two basics, transition step into a throwout into a reverse breakturn to closed. Remember, we were aiming for a reverse breakturn not adlibs.

Our intermediate combo was a throwout into a reverse break turn to beat 3, where the lead lifted his left arm and the follow continued out along the line into a second throwout which was about 270 degrees around from where she started.

The icing combo was in roughly the same shape as the intermediate combo. We did our throwout, into a reverse breakturn. The pivot on beat 3, fed into a release on the lead’s left side. Leads kept the follow’s right hand in their left, and continued their vanilla throwout footwork, but really needed to keep the follow close for the kick on 7. Follows stepped beat 3, and pivoted anticlockwise for beat 4. Beat 5 was a step around to the right, onto the right leg, still rotating out anticlockwise. Beat 6 continued the rotation out and beat 7 felt the compression outwards and we tucked that right leg. We then released and rotated back to closed. The release-step on beat 8 was towards our partner. Follows were now rotating clockwise. They stepped for beat 8 and were aiming to turn on that spot. Leads did “multiple-turn style” steps (1-2, 1-2), around the follow, and in order to came back to closed, you really needed to wait that tiny bit longer before connecting back with the follow into the breakturn.

This week, Mark and Tia up-the-anti in warm-up for Balboa on the River. We will be looking at flow –flow in your pure balboa, in your swing combos and social dancing, and in your transition steps. We look forward to seeing you then.
