recapturing the spirit of the 20s, 30s and 40s

This is recommended for dancers who have completed our Balboa Level one, or possess a knowledge of Balboa fundamentals eg: Bal basic, breakturns, throwout and lollies. It is also highly recommended that intermediate and advanced dancers attend these classes from time to time to polish up on those skills. This Level will enable you to increase your footwork and basic balboa moves, your transitions between Balboa and Swing, and give you the fundamentals and spice, to ‘bring it on’ on the dance floor.

Current Class Review
In level two last week, Mark & Tia had a look at apaches in the context of the Damron Sequence.

We started by practicing some multiple throwouts to get the feeling of going from one throwout into the next. The key to multiple throwouts was to pivot through beats 3 and 4. We quickly moved onto the throwout-to-apache combination. The difference between a throwout-to-throwout and throwout-to-apache came at beat 4. Note for the follows, that these two sequences felt the same until after the couple stepped on beat 3 and started pivoting for beat 4. At the end of beat 4, the leads picked up the follow’s right hand with their left hand, and started to pass the follow’s wrist into a relaxed (and easily rotating) bangle connection in their right hand. The lead completed the pass, as he stepped around for beat 5. This created enough energy for the follow to start stepping in with clockwise rotation. We continued with the energy as we stepped for beat 6. Here the leads wanted to keep their hand steady, to allow the follows to rotate into a kick for beat 7.

At the end of the apache the leads wanted to have a right-to-right hand hold. We did two under arm multiple turns. Each turn was two beats. For each turn follows took two steps to face their lead and leads took two rhythmic and evenly-spaced steps around the follow. Leads were wanting to focus their chest at the follow as they orbited around her. On the second turn, the lead need to bring the follows hand up-and-and down quickly, then keep it steady so as to be ready for the inward compression for the snookie. Follows to make that compression, we needed to match the compression we felt. This created a bounce, and the energy created caused us to step away. Leads, by keeping connected hand, and stepping back at the right angle you could create a second compression outwards like that of a throwout. From here we simply released after the kick and rotated back into closed with a breakturn.

You all did an awesome job. Apaches aren’t easy and this is not a class that we often get to teach level 2s. You did really well with this combo and we were suitably impressed.

This week Mark and Tia are back with a class in pure balboa, working on the lead and follow of patterns in closed. We look forward to seeing you then.
